51.13 - Fifty shades of lemon

17 years old, distilled 16th January 2001, 54.7% abv, Second Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel, 175 bottles, dram price F

The nose has lemon, and plenty of it - lemon fruit gums, crystallised lemon, cloudy lemonade. It’s not aggressive though - quite soft. The mouthfeel is thin with no cling. The body has lemon, melon, honey throat lozenges, and a little hint of ginger and cinnamon. The finish has lemon, ginger and cinnamon.

Water brings out thin, rapidly expanding whoring that settles into brief mottling. The nose gains melon and pears, but retains some of the lemon. The body gains more melon and some red apple, and a lot of cinnamon. The finish gains more cinnamon and some nutmeg replaces the ginger.

A lovely sweet dram that really balances its fruit well - but that spice is too much for me after water.

One for summer evenings.

Technical score: 4/5

Personal preference: I’d have another dram.
